20 Advertising and Marketing Strategies For You

An advertising saturation

Drawing inspiration from Adriel Hampton’s roundup of his 8 tips for government practitioners, and recalling I haven’t written many Saturday roundup pieces in a while, here are my 20 tips and strategies on advertising and marketing, culled from past articles I’ve written here.

  1. While every business should not be engaging in every social networking site, I think it’s important for advertising and marketing firms who identify themselves–or their clients–in the world of customers and sales to identify whether they are walking and talking in social media.
  2. It doesn’t matter what social networking sites you join or how you participate in traditional media streams. The key is to mash it up and not deal in absolutes.
  3. Twitter is one place for branding with customers. But it shouldn’t be your only online outpost. Look at the adult entertainment industry, for instance, which is on MySpace, Facebook, video sharing sites, and other areas. And print. (I did write about Twitter porn’s activities if interested, for icons need help, too.)
  4. Sex and gender appeal is important when marketing in social media. Keep this in mind.
  5. The supermarket is one place where technologies and mindsets are changing to adapt to new ways of doing business.
  6. As Danny Brown commented on this post about Tropicana’s branding strategies, every business needs to look at the orange juice company and reflect on themselves.
  7. How engaging is your campaign? Will it make me pause and reflect?
  8. The nation of Israel is one place to look for branding ideas.
  9. Britney Spears is one to emulate.
  10. Don’t annoy your mother. Remember the failed Motrin campaign?
  11. Save the trees. Stop printing catalogs even if you’re Ikea. If you must be sustainable and spend more money to print with recycled paper.
  12. That said, newspapers are not dying. Or are they?
  13. In the downed economy, Yelp and TripAdvisor are two websites that can help small businesses thrive through the power of customer ratings and reviews. Are you monitoring what people are writing?
  14. If you have an online business, here are my tips to promote DogQuality.com. But every business is different, as indicated in #1 above.
  15. Successful campaigns tend to involve controversies, and GoDaddy is no stranger. Be like GoDaddy.
  16. Encapsulating the above, you can’t go wrong with new ideas. Think out of the box.
  17. Take TV. Have you heard of Canoe Ventures and their plans for relevant TV advertising this year?
  18. Sending business to your competition is another tack to consider.
  19. In short, reinvent the medium.
  20. If you need help, contact me. But first, read what PR wonk Rachel Kay suggests.

This is a really good idea, Ari. Not only does it show new readers more about the stuff you write, it’s also a great grid for offering actual tips that can be used and utilized by your visitors.

Great stuff – “PR wonk” for Rachel? ;-)

Thanks, Danny. Non-blog ideas to encapsulate and go beyond are in the works, too, so stay tuned.

You wouldn’t describe Rachel as a wonk? Guru, perchance?

Rachel would definitely fall in the guru camp. As would Sarah Evans, Lisa Hoffmann, Lizz Harmon, Shannon Paul, Beth Harte, Amber Naslund, Ann Handley and so many more.

What is it with the superstar women? :)

I think I must have been living in a tunnel for the last week – I had no idea this conversation was happening! ;) Wonk, guru, uber flack – I accept it all! Thanks!

Great list Ari – this is the type of post I save and refer back to often. Great case studies to reflect on when deciding how to use social media and what potential risk factors should be taken into consideration.
