Disobedience

Jun. 30, 2007

Tell a child not to do something, and the child will usually disobey. Adults are no different.
Yesterday afternoon, during 30 minutes of free time within an area of the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City, our tour guide repeatedly told us not to enter the Arab marketplace. So, a bunch of us entered.
Granted, I and [...]

Bittersweetness

Jun. 29, 2007

Jerusalem: 7:45 p.m.
I laid my forehead against the exposed stone wall of the Kotel and wept.
Known throughout the Jewish world as the holiest remains from the Roman destruction of the Second Temple thousands of years ago, I hadn’t visited the Wall since my last trip to Israel in 1985.

From Jerusalem with love

Jun. 29, 2007

Off to Israel in 12 hours

Jun. 23, 2007

In about 12 hours, I’ll be sitting on a bus rolling from Boston to New York. From there, it’s a 3-4 hour wait until our El Al flight departs JFK Airport for Tel Aviv.
My entire suitcase is spread out across my bed right now, as I ponder if I really want such-and-such item of clothing, [...]

Whirlybird weirdness in Somerville

Jun. 22, 2007

I’ve lived at this Somerville address for about a year now, and tonight was the first time I recall a helicopter flying so close to the ground. It woke me out of my online stupor, thinking there was some fire or bomb scare nearby. It seemed to be about 50 feet above neighborhood roofs, and [...]
