26 Blogs From A to Z

by Ari Herzog on September 29, 2009 · 4 comments

Launched in March 2008 as a self-described online magazine rack of blogs, Alltop is a go-to website that nearly every blogger I know visits frequently in addition to (or in place of) RSS readers and Twitter streams to learn what people are writing in given topics and to visit blogs that are trending and hot.

Sarah Perez elaborates:

We tend to use services like Google Reader or a configurable start page like Netvibes to read our feeds and this is fine for us. However, we’re not necessarily representative of the masses. Not everyone wants to tweak and customize their own personal reader – they simply want a web destination where they can catch up on the news. Alltop can serve that purpose.

Starting at the beginning of the alphabet, if you click the letter “A” you will see a pop-up display of every submitted blog category beginning with that letter:

Want to see adoption blogs? Click the keyword and be brought to adoption.alltop.com, of which I attach an extract:

By mousing over blog post titles, descriptions pop up. By clicking the titles, new windows or tabs open in your web browser. Don’t like it? Close the tab. Like it? Keep reading and maybe subscribe. See why Alltop brands itself as an online magazine repository of blogs?

To give you an example of Alltop subjects and blogs (both of which are frequently added), peruse through the following 26 letters of the alphabet:

Adoption: Just Enjoy Him
Buddhism: The Zennist
Chess: The Kenilworthian
Deaf: A Deaf Mom Shares Her World
Egyptology: Living in Egypt
Franchising: Rush on Business
Guitars: Guitar Licks
Homeless: The Homeless Guy
Inspiration: Carrie & Danielle
Jewelry: Dominion of Light Jewels
Kids: Cute Potato
Linguistics: Paleoglot
Multiple Sclerosis: My Journey with Multiple Sclerosis
Nanotechnology: Nano Bugle
Outdoors: Go Backpacking
Personal Finance: The Simple Dollar
Quilting: Stitchin’ Friends
Rocketry: Pillow Astronaut
Star Wars: The Official Star Wars Blog
Twitter: TwiTip
User Interface: Church of the Customer
Visual Effects: Effects Corner
Wordpress: Blog Strategies
Xenophobia: Google Blog Search for Xenophobia

Ari – thanks for picking my travel blog, Go Backpacking, for the Outdoors category!

It is cool to get some perspective and know that Alltop does serve a purpose and certain segment of blog readers.
