Be Aware of Your Computer and Online Security

Did you know October marks the fifth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month?

Do you share your passwords with other people, let your children roam the internet alone, and dish out your personal information? Or do you protect yourself both on your computer and online?

If you’re like the woman in this photo, courtesy of ISC2 Cyber Exchange, you protect your identity, right?

Among a list of 10 tips to contribute to cybersecurity awareness, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity Division, are ideas to post signs near the family computer, hold high school and college events to talk to people about online safety and security habits, and change your passwords.

On the latter, I recently wrote about creating a mnemonic system to protect your password from hackers. If you are new to this blog, I suggest you check it out.

The best source of information about online security is the National Cyber Security Alliance, which set up a special website with 8 best practices to stay safe online, at www.staysafeonline.org. There is also a wealth of information and other links, courtesy of the kind folks at Teen Checkup.

Before you read about this annual event, had you known about it? It’s definitely received some press over the years, though I presume the media is more concerned with Tina Fey lookalikes than online security and identity theft.

On a side note, I’d enjoy hearing from any legislative trackers why the U.S. Senate passed a resolution with flying colors, while the House version is stalled.

October is a busy month. Breast Cancer Awareness, Halloween, Yom Kippur, Cyber Awareness… did I miss anything? Ah, mid-terms and finals for college students.

I had to spend 3 hours last night cleaning out the Smart antivirus 2009 malware from my daughters computer only for her to run the application that installed it in the first place again! sigh.. maybe I can wrap her up in the jumper like the picture above and keep her like that!

I need to be better about passwords than I am. Though I do use stronger ones for more important sites.

So far, my 6 year old really isn’t that interested in computers so I haven’t thought much about the issue. I think she’s rebelling – she doesn’t want to like them because Mommy likes them too much.

How old is your daughter Andy? You don’t look old enough to be a dad in your photo :-)

impNerd: October is also, apparently, Driver Safety Month. Go figure. I wonder what November is famous for, other than T Day.

Andy: I don’t know what type of antivirus programs you run, but might I suggest ClamWin, an open source program for Windows? That’s what I use.
