Blogging for Authenticity

If your blog is not authentic to who you are, then you may as well stop blogging now.

Using Technorati’s 2008 State of the Blogosphere as a benchmark, over 1 million blog posts are created every day. There has to be some mix of writing in first person or taking a unique point of view for your blog to stand out.

The notion of building a blog and hoping people come is disingenuous. There are too many blogs. You have to be remarkable. You have to be authentic. You have to be yourself. You have to show me that there is a person behind your blog post, or I’m going somewhere else.

If you need help, Lorelle VanFossen provides blogging tips to succeed; and Jason Baer shares a healthy blogging recipe. Both will invigorate life into your blog.

But remember: Be authentically you.

Damn straight. Anything else would be selling yourself short. I try to take no prisoners with my writing style, personality and overall outlook on life. I probably end up pissing a few people off. But guess what…I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t.

For me, a vision of authencity is old pine floors and leather knapsacks. You know authenticity in these things through unhidden marks of stress. The ‘distressed’ look of an antique pine floor *is* its character. The scars and brandy-colored mottled tell you the leather is real.

I don’t read authenticity in anything unless I get a sense of fragility, mortality, and honest revelation of bumps and bruises. You get a vivid sense of vulnerability on the one hand, but a tough determination to live on, on the other. Old pine. Old leather.

By these lights, not a lot of blogging passes muster. I’ll put you in the authentic category, though, Ari. I do this because I’ve seen you take verbal stones in consequence to some of the bold theses you concoct. You don’t always come out smelling like a rose, but you always come back….like old pine, like old leather.

I hope I don’t smell like a rose, Bob. If anything, I’m of a cucumber-melon smell. Anything else, I’d wonder if my body soap is mislabeled.

I say be authentic, and share some bits of your personal side as well. That way, people will see more than just a blog – they will see a person and what motivates them to blog.
