Seventy-five percent of Americans can’t be wrong.
I’m just learning about this now, fact-checking data from a Wikipedia entry on the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell military policy, but a Washington Post-ABC News poll released last weekend indicates overwhelming bipartisan support for gays to openly serve in the U.S. armed forces.
I’m hardly surprised. America’s come a long way in 15 years, not to mention increased solidarity with each other over patriotism and standing up to terrorists in the wake of 9/11.
With 64% of Republicans, 75% of independents, and over 80% of Democrats opposing the 1993 policy, shouldn’t Congress follow the will of the people, take the advice of the ACLU, repeal the 1993 law, and force the military to adhere to it?
If nothing else, popular opinion from all sides of the debate suggest Elaine Donnelly, of the Center for Military Readiness, should not be invited back to testify before the House Armed Services Committee in light of her harsh remarks earlier this week:
Donnelly treated the panel to an extraordinary exhibition of rage. She warned of “transgenders in the military.” She warned that lesbians would take pictures of people in the shower. She spoke ominously of gays spreading “HIV positivity” through the ranks.“We’re talking about real consequences for real people,” Donnelly proclaimed. Her written statement added warnings about “inappropriate passive/aggressive actions common in the homosexual community,” the prospects of “forcible sodomy” and “exotic forms of sexual expression,” and the case of “a group of black lesbians who decided to gang-assault” a fellow soldier.
At the witness table with Donnelly, retired Navy Capt. Joan Darrah, a lesbian, rolled her eyes in disbelief. Retired Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Alva, a gay man who was wounded in Iraq, looked as if he would explode.
Later during the hearing, according to The Carpetbagger Report, Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) pointed at Darrah and asked Donnelly, “Would you please tell me, Miss Donnelly, why I should give one twit about this woman’s sexual orientation, when it didn’t interfere one bit with her service?”
Donnelly mumbled something about “forced intimacy” when Shays spoke quickly, “You’re saying she has no right to serve her country because she happens to have a different sexual orientation than you.”
You need to see this to believe it. Here’s a snippet of a C-SPAN broadcast highlighting a cross-fire between Donnelly and Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), an Iraq War Army veteran from the 82nd Airbone Division:
She sounds like a real classy lady. Moreover, Donnelly has no military experience so who does she think she is to point figures and call names? And why doesn’t CNN quote the above passage?

Yes indeed, Ari. In Urban terms, I would have to say that Ms. Donnelly “got served.” Why? Because she is a moron.
