Finding what is lost

While applying for jobs and going on sporadic interviews, I receive a weekly unemployment check from the state to help me with basic living expenses. Each week, I submit an online form that testifies I looked for work but was not paid for work; and each week, I receive a claim check for the previous week’s efforts.

I never received a check for the week ending June 30. I thought it was delayed due to Independence Day, so I waited it out. By mid-July, the check still hadn’t arrived though subsequent claim checks did.

After calling the unemployment assistance office, they sent me a form to fill out and sign to request a new check.

I received that replacement check, and deposited it over the weekend.

A few minutes ago, I walked upstairs to place a note on a roommate’s bedroom door and noticed two piles of his mail in front of his door. I quickly thumbed through it, combining the two piles into one…and saw the missing check in its envelope, postmarked July 6.

I’ll shred this check… but I’m, like, AARRRGGGGHHHHH!
