I love when I go to a historic city or town and see people doing whatever they can to sell their wares and compliment the city. The down town area are so much more pleasing when you see things outside on the sidewalks to give an idea of what the store is selling, especially when they are arranged in such a pleasing way as Flukes and finds and Friends....As for the A frame signs. Keep them coming to advertise where the shops are and what they are. We need more positive words about the downtown to keep businesses here instead of all the crap that makes so many leave....Keep a better outlook on life and business, instead of trying to make a problem where there doesn't need to be one.
Remember it took only ONE person to take prayer out of schools.

@Bil: I'm tickled by your comment that people are apathetic and only say something when they want to complain, not to praise. Perhaps this is a good reason why councilors should be holding more routine ward meetings. The ward councilor hosts and the at-large councilors are invited.

@Luna: You raise good points. Are you raising them with your fellow residents and/or elected leaders? How can I help with this blog?

I agree with Bil the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
People should be concern about our waste water treatment plant, the landfill problem, and the terrible condition of our streets. Those are issues that are really important.
Advertisement works that's why business do it.
Luna

Ari,

While you are correct that the council isn't currently trying to ban a-frame signs, let's be honest... I think we both know where all of this is heading.

The sad part is that the potential that these signs will all eventually be banned is based on the complaints of a small group of folks who don't like the signs. Most folks just don't care and aren't bothered by the signs. Unfortunately no one is going to call the city councilors when they don't care or aren't bothered by something, they'll only call when something bothers them.

can you imagine this call ever coming in to a councilor: "hello, I just called to say that I'm not bothered by a guy living in a clam shack or A-frame signs on our streets. I'd like you to take my general lack of concern seriously into consideration when these issues arise in our fair city. Thanks"

It just doesn't happen that way.

Bil Silliker
Licorice & Sloe Company

To be fair, the city council is not trying to ban signs from anyone. But when applicants step forward with variance applications, the committee on licenses and permits is charged with recommending a course of action to the council as a whole. That's what happened last night with Licorice & Sloe and Port City Tours, both of which were denied A-frame signs.

I, for one, like the signs. I like all kinds of "clutter" on the downtown streets. It makes it more interesting to wander around.

Of course, we do have to keep a lane clear for folks in wheelchairs, etc., but we should be able to do that without simply banning them.
