Recognizing a desire for change, the world voted for Barack Obama nearly four months ago and elected him into the office of President of the United States. The world has another vote coming up–one month from today.
I refer to Earth Hour, echoed in this 30-second public service announcement:
On my blog last year, I wrote about Earth Hour. I wrote about walking around Newburyport and taking pictures and observing how many households and businesses and cultural landmarks turned off their lights.
I was disappointed. Earlier, I had told my friends and acquaintances and pleaded with the community in a letter to the editor. Some people responded, I later learned. But I otherwise spoke to deaf ears. Maybe they didn’t know. Maybe they didn’t care. I hope they didn’t know.
What began with 2.2 million people turning off their lights for 60 minutes in Sydney, Australia in 2007 led to 40 million in 2008. Can we break records next month in the name of global warming and sustainability? Can we use social media–blogs, tweets, videos, podcasts, pictures–over the next 30 days to tell everyone we possibly can to vote?
There are 28 days left…
Vote for change. Vote for survival. Vote for your planet.

Last year my family and I observed Earth Hour. The kids seemed to really get into it, and I thought it was an interesting way to open up discussion with them. So for us, this ended up being a memorable family event that we still talk about.
But this year, won’t we all be at GovCamp2.0 in DC that night? If so, wouldn’t it be fun to do something for Earth Hour while we are all there? Or is that too geeky?
I won’t be there. I’ll actually be at a wedding, but that won’t prevent me from evangelizing others to do something. If nothing else, cultural landmarks that are usually lit should be dark for that hour.
