I'm doing a project and need a definition for social media and came across your website. Thanks for the compilation of definitions and you're right- Wikipedia's definition sux. Sometimes people forget that regular, often uneducated and ignorant, people compose the content on Wikipedia and it is therefore not a valid source (and should never be quoted in any type of official work).

Anyway, I don't like any of the definitions above as a whole... I like parts of certain ones, but not one as a whole so I decided to create my own.

Social Media is the media created online through social networks.

That is my very simple definition. Some people may not like that I used the same words in the definitions, so for them I have:

Social Media is the content created on the internet by individuals through online networks such as blogger, facebook, and twitter.

And my third:

Social Media is the user content created on the internet through online networks; meant to be easily shared with peers around the world to exchange ideas, opinions, thoughts, and news.
examples: blogger, facebook, twitter

So again, here are my definitions:

1. Social Media is the media created online through social networks.

2. Social Media is the content created on the internet by individuals through online networks such as blogger, facebook, and twitter.

3. Social Media is the user content created on the internet through online networks; meant to be easily shared with peers around the world to exchange ideas, opinions, thoughts, and news.

examples: blogger, facebook, twitter

Social media is what happens when people use their innate ability to be social and spread the word about a topic, typically using the internet.
