Hi Ari,
Social media is just the opportunity to meet new people without having to physically be there. It’s also a great way to let large amounts of peeps know what you are doing at once without having to tell each one individually.
I recently wrote a pretty big post explaining what I thought about social media. It’s called: Is social networking good or bad and why should you blog?
I love social media because I love being around people. My husband on the other hand is very shy and would have a hard time talking to someone that he doesn’t know.
I choose to concentrate most of my efforts in just a few places and build more solid relationships rather than trying to spread myself thin.
All the best,
Eren

Hey Ari,

Social Media is simply a variety of avenues for engaging with those we know, those we admire and those we’d like to get to know. I teach my marketing clients to use the venues appropriate for their business to keep in touch with past clients offering even more value and to reach out to potential clients with something of interest to them.

It’s easy for people to judge Social Media by what they have seen on TV that trivializes it. But as you know there is much more than meets the eye. The potential for marketing and politics is profound.

I’m looking forward to your Not Scary Social Media panel next week.

Thanks!

To me social media is the possibility to get in contact with people all over the world that otherwise I surely only under severe difficulties would have had the chance to get in contact with. Social media not only consists of the technology that enables us to communicate and stay in contact without the need to physically being there but it is also the openness of people to let stranger get in contact with them.
It’s this psychological aspect that makes me such a great fan of the whole thing. An atmosphere of helping and being helped is being created without immediately being told of or sales bringing in the sledgehammer. People like Chris Brogan are on the forefront of this movement. Your Not Scary Social Media also paves the way for more open minds and hearts.
Cheers
Tom

Is “openness” key? Could social media exist and succeed in a closed system?

All the world’s a stage: social media empowers everyone to have a voice and be active participants in the conversation/solution.

Is your definition implicit to being online?

Yes. Definitely in my mind – it’s online.

In a nutshell, social media is just to grow your social presence online. You get a chance here to make new friends, introduce your business to them and much more. I personally use Facebook, Orkut and Myspace.

Social media is a excellent way to meet and communicate with people who have shared interests. Some of my really good friends in my hiking group started out this way.

Quite simply, I believe social media is using common marketing ideas and methods on interactive websites to build popularity, traffic & sales! Social Media gives us the chance to build relationships, create a brand & build the popularity of your business or yourself through constant interaction and sharing valuable content.
