From Bristol and Canterbury to Herefordshire and beyond, over 15,000 students and 700 local government councillors continue to participate in an amazing online competition since it started in Britain in 2002.
For one week every year, local councils who opt-in to the program nominate five of their members to compete for “Youth Champion.” Area students visit an interactive website–called I’m a Councillor, Get Me Out of Here!–that enables them to view pictures, read briefs, take democracy tests, participate in live chats, and ask questions. The councillors do their part, trying to give the best answers. The kicker: Not unlike TV episodes of “Survivor,” least-liked councillors are voted off until the champion remains.
Produced by Gallomanor Communications, recent surveys indicate 73% of students enjoy the program because:
- It gives them a voice
- It brings councillors alive
- It helps them learn about local government and why it’s important
In an attempt to better explain what the program is about, Gallomanor produced a short video, during which you can hear students, a councillor, and a teacher share their candid thoughts.
