Improve Your Speech by Blogging

OMG!! Did you, like, read this, uhh, story from earlier this, you know, year, on Lifehacker about well, cutting out conversational, you know, placeholders for better, uhh, persuasion?

Sadly, a lot of people speak in Valley Girl language every day.

In my comment to Kevin Purdy, I referred to the following quote by then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Note where I’ve emboldened the placeholders:

Well, he, um, has, uh, to reach what is the, the magic number of 2,210. And, uh, he’s not there yet, and we are working hard. We were thrilled by our victory in West Virginia last night. It was a great validation of my message about fighting for people, and, uh, we’re going onto Kentucky, and Oregon, and the rest of the contest, and then we’ll see what happens with Michigan and Florida, and by, you know, June 4th, we’ll have a clearer idea about where everyone stands.

I’ve never seen a blog where people write content like the above. Have you?

Perhaps the content in blogs and other online media should be a wake up call to society that people using everyday speech should pause before speaking. Don’t you agree?

You know how to create a hyperlink in a comment, right?

Like, you are totally right. In all seriousness, I remember working with a lady who during her presentations would say “um” twice per sentence, at minimum. It was awful. Sometimes I think the text messaging/IM generation is going to be challenged when formally writing, because they are getting used to abbreviating and emoticon-ing everything. My text messages tend to be long, but I would rather that than sound like I am still in high school.

i am afraid stuff like uuh, hum, seesmic put that language in the light once again.
When speaking cinema was invented, the average level of movie makers went down.
The language is definitly an art.

BTW, I am sorry for my approximative english…
