Key Quotes on New Marketing and Social Media

by Ari Herzog on October 18, 2008 · 15 comments

Over the past week, I attended a series of events in the Boston area encompassing the social web that helped explain the why and how for businesses, organizations, and individuals to shift their mindset from knowledge management to knowledge sharing.

I met many fascinating people and wrote many pages’ worth of case examples and other tips for success that I hadn’t considered. I need to digest the information, and will write more in future articles. For now, I want to provide you with some key quotes as part of my weekly roundup series.

Key quotes from the New Marketing Summit

Co-produced by CrossTech Media and the Boston Marketing Association, the two-day event was led by conference co-chairs Chris Brogan, Paul Gillin, and David Meerman Scott.

  • “Think like a publisher, not a marketer.” – David Meerman Scott
  • “Social media offers new opportunities to activate…brand enthusiasm.” – Stacy DeBroff, founder and CEO of Mom Central
  • “Hook into someone’s flow [via corporate postings of photos, videos, and other content on web streams before a new product is released].” – Bill Cava, chief technology officer for Ektron
  • A website “should be a holistic experience channel.” – Darren Guarnaccia, vice president of product marketing for Sitecore
  • “If content is king, then conversion is queen.” – John Munsell, CEO of Bizzuka
  • “[The youth] can steer you in the right direction.” – Freddie Laker, director of digital strategy for Sapient
  • “Blog policy at Microsoft is just two words: Blog Smart.” – Lawrence Liu, director of platform strategy for Telligent
  • “New marketing is about the relationships, not the medium.” – Ben Grossman, founder and chief strategist for BiGMarK
  • “In the absence of communication among your customers, advertising rules.” – Don Peppers, founding partner of Peppers & Rogers Group and 1to1 Media
  • “By creating compelling content, you can become a celebrity.” – Paul Gillin
  • “Most [PR] agencies are a waste of time and you should fire them…I will never have a separate budget for new marketing.” – Alan Scott, chief marketing officer for Dow Jones
  • “Email marketing [with nothing else] will lead you down a really bad road.” – Chip Terry, vice president and general manager for Zoominfo
  • “You are in the findability department. The marketing department is dead. I don’t even know if that is a real word. Findability.” – Todd Defren, principal for SHIFT Communications
  • “The Internet is the biggest psychological and social human experience…We make encouraging viral activity.” – Cynthia Gordon, vice president of new media marketing for Universal Orlando Resort

Over 300 people from around the country attended; and many of us sent live Twitter messages throughout (and subsequent to) the summit. You can read pages and pages of short notes with the #nms08 Twitter tag.

Key Quotes from Social Media Club Boston

The 90-minute evening discussion on corporate social responsibility was moderated by Brian Cavoli, the vice president of marketing for Digital Influence Group.

I didn’t bring my notepad with me (was tired from writing all day at the New Marketing Summit) but a few of us live tweeted from the event under the #smcboston tag.

The three panelists were:

Key Quotes from Social Media Breakfast Boston

Founded in Boston last year by Bryan Person, the organically-grown networking breakfast is now global. After Bryan moved from Boston to Austin, it was taken over and is currently run by Robert Collins, a vice president for SHIFT Communications.

The two-hour event began with networking amid pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A, and followed by more networking.

The panelists for the ninth Boston breakfast were technologist Peter Kim, David Alston of social media monitoring firm Radian6, and Jamie Pappas of EMC.

  • “Social media is not a media. [The key is to listen, engage, and build relationships.] – David Alston
  • “It’s quite scary for people to talk publicly about the things they are doing.” – Jamie Pappas
  • “Just use it…as long as you know what you’re talking about.” – Peter Kim

You can read Twitter notes from the approximate 60 attendees with the #smb9 tag.

If you were at any of the events, do you have any more “best of” quotes to add? I took notes by many more speakers and other people I networked with, but I didn’t explicitly quote them as I did the people above. For instance, I scribbled copious notes by C.C. Chapman, Christopher S. Penn, and Matt Peters, but they will be the subjects of future posts.

If you are reading about these events for the first time, do you have any thoughts you’d like to share?

Great summary of key NMS08 quotes. I have already tried to recruit some new “publishers” since my return from Boston.

Great post!
i really liked what Peter Klim said, that’s great. it seams that a lot of people just pretend to know about what their talking about, and this is why we trust our friends rather than the so called experts!

thanks for this post really enjoyed reading!

Ari, great idea collecting quotes and posting them. Neat to be able to go back to them in the future when you are looking for just the right way to convey something to someone.

It was great to finally meet you in person at the SMB as well.

Cheers.

Ari,

Thanks for the great summary. These kinds of summaries are so helpful, especially for us who had to work the show and missed some of the panels.

Tracy: If you’d like another publisher, I’m at the ready!

Kemeny: I have no problem trusting experts, as long as they know what they’re talking about and/or can open their minds.

The Davids: I’m always listening, always have. And as a former community news reporter, when I have a pen and paper in front of me, I’m always listening for that single quotation that makes the day. Thanks for stopping by (and obviously listening too)!

Mike: Glad to help. Thanks for helping out, so I could sit there and take notes to help you more!

Thanks for mentioning John’s quote. He had quite a few, including my favorite, “Don’t let your content rot.” :-)

Thank you Ari, the qoutes are amazing and ironic but more true than ever. It seems the old ways of marketing online are reversing.

In some aspects it used to be common to place your product, brand or company out of reach to kind of create a sense of royalty and a “better than thou” sort of presentation that kind of created an image of being an expert or appearing as having a greater quality because you were “above the rest”.

More and more these days it seems as though we want to interact with brands and marketers as friends and feel as if we are involved on a ground floor, eye to eye level with the brands and products we purchase.
I think this is all for the best. My favorite quote is “If content is king, Conversation is Queen” … I have a feeling that positions may change in the royal court in the near future :)
Thanks again
