The legacy of John Hancock

Nestled in the western wilderness of Berkshire County and mere miles from the New York border, the town of Hancock, Massachusetts is a hamlet of serenity that ought to please the former Continental Congress president and first Governor of Massachusetts.

After hiking two miles to the summit of Jiminy Peak yesterday on a partly cloudy morning, I gazed over the mountains and valleys that lay spread before me.

Invoking the day’s beauty, I thought about John Hancock’s legacy and wondered how he and his contemporaries would react to cellphones, the Internet, and wind turbines (such as the 378-foot, 1.5MW turbine on the mountainous peak).

Cellphone service is nonexistent at Jiminy Peak, and Internet accessibility is only possible in the resort’s lobby.

“I would like to issue a complaint,” my sister and I overheard a woman say yesterday to the front desk staffer.

“I have stayed at many Wyndham Vacation Resorts but yours is the first that only has one public kiosk. I don’t want to wait in line. The Internet should be more accessible.”

My sister and I chuckled.

Had she really wanted to connect to the Net, she would have brought her own laptop, as I did. Or, she’d wait in line like everyone else.

But everyone has an opinion.

While TV channel surfing last night, I caught a few moments of a televised focus group of Pennsylvania voters on C-SPAN who spoke candidly in a round-table format about their thoughts on Obama this, Clinton this, McCain that.

The people care about their candidates.

Because the voters are going to decide this issue one way or the other, I just don’t think the candidates’ positions are that big of a deal. – John Hancock

Was Hancock naive?

I would think the opposite was true, wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t their positions be of utmost importance considering if they can please the most amount of people, then they get the most votes…right?

I bet if you changed the title for this post to simply “Hancock” you’ll get all sorts of new readers.

Andy: So you are saying Hancock was naive.

David: Doesn’t SEO work for blog comments, too?

I wouldn’t use that terminology, I guess. But, yes.

Yeah, SEO works across the whole of a page, but the title and H1 have to be the most important. Anyway, I saw that you followed up with a synchronicity post, nice work

Andy: What would you use?

David: How is the title and h1 of this page different from the next page? Both have Hancock. Or am I missing something?
