Lifestyle Blogs Can Help You Save Money or Feel Better

Does your financial plan look like this?

I don’t need to tell you that money is tight as the United States experiences its worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Due to the interconnectedness of the global stock exchanges, the price of oil, and the war against the Axis of Evil, the world stands with the U.S. in uneasy trepidation.

Rather than live our lives in bleakness, I take advantage of my weekly roundup by sharing with you some of my favorite blogs that provide tips and advice on stretching your dollar. I don’t read them daily, but when I do, I walk away with a sense of relief and understanding that I am not alone.

Where applicable, I add their Twitter profiles at the end of each bullet.

• If you hate debt and don’t like risk, you’ll enjoy the advice of Frugal Dad. My weekly roundup idea stemmed from his. Responding to an email request, “Dad” told me that he’s seen a spike in search engine traffic to his blog in recent weeks from people searching for “ways to save money” or “how to survive a down economy.” If you add a comment to his latest article, you will be entered into a drawing to receive a free canvas tote bag to take to the grocery store. • If you are tired of the gobbledygook financial advice on CNN and MSNBC, check out The Simple Dollar where Trent Hamm offers financial talk for the rest of us. I also emailed him for some statistics due to the economy, and Trent replied that despite seeing about 40,000 page views a month, September 2008 included the highest number of visiting traffic. TSD was one of the first blogs I frequented when I first started reading blogs. In his latest article, Trent asks, “Should an entrepreneurial high schooler go to college?” (Twitter: @trenttsd)
• If you are interested in discussing personal financial management, maintaining successful relationships with your parents and children, or how to be successful in your job, Ron’s advice at The Wisdom Journal is the place to be. Admitting he is not wise, Ron’s latest advice includes 10 tips to stretch your health care dollar. (Twitter: @wisdomjournal)
• Boston Globe columnist Penelope Trunk offers unparalleled “advice at the intersection of work and life,” her Brazen Careerist blog’s description blurts. She’s witty, blunt, and is respected in diverse circles. Penelope’s latest advice suggests 3 ways work will change when Gen Y is in charge. (Twitter: @penelopetrunk)
• Career management is the centerfold of the JibberJobber Blog, where Jason Alba and his band of advice elves offer information on relationship management, job search tools, and more. The latest JibberJobber entry (I love that name!) is about not losing faith in yourself. (Twitter: @jasonalba)
• You’ve heard of market intelligence firm Hoover’s, right? At the Hoover’s Business Zone, Tim Walker offers daily insights into business and productivity. I like his on-target advice that every person, business owner or not, should follow to better understand the market and business operations. Tim’s entry from yesterday is about Ford beating Toyota – the Toyota way! (Twitter: @twalk)
