Lifting Social Media Marketing with Gravity

In the spirit of Kara Brickman’s compendium of post-PodCamp Boston 4 brouhaha at the beginning of August, I felt it prudent to emulate her and share with you a summary of social media strategies gleaned from this week’s Gravity Summit.

Clapping handsBeverly Macy and Ronald Rumford deserve a standing ovation — GO ON, STAND UP AND CLAP — for their awesome contributions putting on the ritz and glitz at the Harvard Faculty Club Monday. They assembled a top-notch cadre of generals who sang tunes of both personal and organizational accomplishments in the world of social media, and provided plenty of case studies for you, eager reader, to take notes and assemble best practices and social media policies to show your boss.

With keynotes by MC Hammer and Gary Vaynerchuk; and talks by many, including social media directors Troy Kelley of Arnold Worldwide, Todd Defren of Shift Communications, David Puner of Dunkin Donuts, Christi Day of Southwest Airlines, and Wendy Harman of the American Red Cross, the take away of the day focused on education, information, and empowerment.

  • Troy Kelley spoke of social media’s progression from a monologue to a dialogue to a “tryalogue.” If you don’t understand how tools can be used and start trying them out, you might as well not use them at all.
  • A powerful business tip was shared by Gary Vaynerchuk: “Love the process more than the results and you will always win.”
  • Christi Day responded to a question that she routinely engages in “collabition” with aviation counterparts, such as JetBlue Airlines’ Morgan Johnston.
  • “Our DNA is made for us to communicate,” said MC Hammer.

Hats off to Ramon De Leon, operations manager for a Chicago chain of Domino’s Pizza franchises who rocked the room with a great presentation:

The faculty club’s “theatre” was filled to capacity, with about 100 professionals and students engaged in dozens of fields spanning traditional PR and marketing to new marketing and media.

Did I mention the entire day was broadcast live on CNN.com? The media conglomerate’s vice president of digital and interactive marketing, Andy Mitchell, was among the presenters. Here’s an edited snippet featuring Hammer, Gary, and Ramon:

Other gravitational reviews I found online include blog posts by Mike Schneider, Traackr’s Derek Staletsky, Edward Boches, Viddler’s Derek Steen, Graham Nelson of Allen & Gerritsen, and Michael Bourne of Mullen.

Mike Proulx deserves special mention for his two summaries on both the corporate Hill Holliday blog and his personal narrative.

Mike also snapped numerous pictures he uploaded to Flickr and can be found here, alongside photography sets by Joselin Mane, Robert Collins, Gradon Tripp, and a smaller set by me.

Adam Zand seems to be the only person who uploaded audio recordings from the event.

Leslie Graydos of New England Cable News submitted a TV review of the event, featuring extracts from Hammer, Rumford, and Kelley.


Not to be outdone were newspaper overviews in the Boston Globe and Boston Phoenix.

I also can’t hit the publish button without a nod to MC Hammer who posted abstracts of his televised interviews from CNN and from NECN on his blog. Yep, he’s a blogger.

Love the process more than the results… that really is true. You can tell someone who is doing something just to get results are less enthusiastic and informative than someone who just loves whatever they are doing. And the more enthusiastic people will gain more valuable attention in the end.
