Have you called John McCain’s campaign headquarters recently at the Virginia-based number of (703) 418-2008?
A pleasant-sounding girl’s voice tells you which keys to press to enable which actions — but the phone didn’t answer until about 10 rings! I almost hung up.
Barack Obama’s contact page lists a toll-free number at (866) 675-2008. After two rings, an automated male voice points you to the official website and continues with a series of keys to press for which action.
Compare both of them to Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr at (800) BOB-BARR when after one ring, a paid or volunteer staffer named Andy said hi and asked how he can help me. I said I had the wrong number.
Barr, by the way, is one of 11 other presidential candidates who’s surname does not end in Obama or McCain.
We talk about email and social networking as the end-all of communication, but who doesn’t own a telephone, cellular or not? Call those numbers. Call any number. Judge for yourself how many rings it takes for someone to answer the phone and what they will say.
