Mutant lobster craze missed Massachusetts

by Ari Herzog on June 6, 2007

National Geographic profiled Maine lobsterman Alan Robinson in July 2006 after his 1 in 50 million catch of a two-toned lobster off the coast of Bar Harbor.

Cited in the article, Maine’s Mount Desert Oceanarium said they received three such lobsters in 35 years.

Statisticians, take out your calculators.

Jim Mataronas IV, a Rhode Island lobsterman, caught a similar two-toned lobster last week. Arbroath includes a video, and Lobster Hoopla has more details.

With Maine and Rhode Island in the mix, the odds are favorable for a Gloucester or Fall River lobsterman to catch one of the crustaceans, placing Massachusetts on the mutant lobster map.
