Kirsten Haglund, representing Michigan, won the 2008 Miss America pageant last night. I didn’t watch the competition, but it’s being rebroadcast right now on TLC and found it while channel surfing as it offers mindless entertainment in the background.
Miss Massachusetts, Valerie Amaral, didn’t even make the top 15. In fact, in the 87-year history of the Miss America pageant, 1933’s Valerie Bergeron was the only New England winner, and from Connecticut at that.
With the Miss Massachusetts national teenager pageant approaching in March, wouldn’t it be great to find some young woman to represent Newburyport, and take it from there on to a national win?
