In the spirit of Blog Action Day and its annual theme of poverty; and stealing an idea from Bryan Eisenberg’s OnClick and Mitch Joel’s Pixelated pseudo-conferences, I present you with four videos that speak to the essence of poverty.
Music transcends boundaries. I begin with “We are the World,” the 1985 song by USA for Africa that tried to call attention to the African famine:
Canadian rocker Sarah McLachlan understands music. She tries to bring the message of poverty to the forefront. In this video, she and other artists argue for the government to contribute 0.7% of its national income to foreign aid:
From music to film, and to the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in particular, here is “Historia de un letrero,” the “Short Story” winner, that speaks to poverty, social change, and the power of one:
And nobody knows “One” better than U2 lead singer Bono, who spoke to a room full of technology geeks in 2005 about the importance for an African renewal, that the 1985 cause only began the movement, and that his One Campaign aims to continue it:
