Reach Out and Touch Someone

Meet Irene KoehlerIf you remember the jingle from the AT&T commercials in the 1980s, you ought to appreciate how I felt yesterday when Irene Koehler picked up her California telephone and dialed my number.

“Hi, this is Irene Koehler and I’m calling you out of the blue,” she said as I simultaneously associated her calm voice with the Almost Savvy blog and Twitter profile at @irenekoehler.

You can see her savvy networking in action here.

She continued to praise the specialness of extending internet personas and online networking with voice to voice communication.

I couldn’t agree more, recollecting numerous phone calls and Skype conversations with Jacob Morgan (@jacobm), Marc Meyer (@marc_meyer), Adriel Hampton (@adrielhampton),  and Josh Peters (@royalantsjosh), among others.

Irene and I talked for about 30 minutes about her ongoing speaking presentations about using social media in school circles and an ongoing paradigm shift occurring in both secondary and higher education, to family life, to setting boundaries when a mother and teenage daughter are Facebook friends.

The difference between past conversations and Irene’s yesterday is she called me, as she said, “out of the blue.” By contrast, my calls with Jacob and others were planned in advance to occur on a given day and time.

Both work, but I’ll argue that when you’re spontaneous, you can truly reach out and touch someone.

What a delight it was to speak with you yesterday, Ari. I’ve enjoyed your blog for quite awhile and appreciated the opportunity to tell you so directly. I’ve learned much from your writing as you’ve challenged me to consider different points of view, which is always a good thing.

While I am a huge advocate of the value of virtual networking, there really is nothing like having the chance to speak with someone directly, where humor, nuance and intent can more easily be understood. Life in 140 characters is great, but comes with its limitations.

I’ve just returned from yet another presentation to students about managing their online reputation. As always, it began with looks of skepticism, but they quickly pulled out pen and paper to note all of the tips I was sharing. I especially working with those newer to understanding how all of this online stuff works and why it matters.

Returning to the computer to find your blog post made my day even better. The fact that you were touched by my call makes it all the more special. I look forward to connecting again with you soon. Please let me know how I can help you in your endeavors.

And, feel free to call anytime!

Irene

Reach Out And Touch Someone

Don’t know about you, but I miss the monolith that was AT&T

Oh wait, my bad

It’s the same Monolith today, just rebuilt from the parts of the divestiture.

Pretty Clever!

I am happy how corporations always get there way in the end. At least someone wins. Maybe not me, but someday

Someday I will win…

Ari, Irene,
I too was the fortunate recipient of a phone call from Irene, although it wasn’t out of the blue.

I can say that face to face or phone conversational skills are extremely important and a part of what makes your personal brand a success or failure. I’ve been jarred a few times by the contrast between a social media contact’s witty online banter and their actual face to face (sometimes sullen) personality. In one case, I should have been clued in by the phone conversation we had. I think he was channeling Gary Cooper: long pauses and one word answers, “yup” or “nope.”

Do they teach phone skills or some sort of inter-personal communication in school these days? Networking 101 class? I bet Irene could do a good job teaching that to high schoolers.
