I have usernames and profiles on dozens of social networking sites — from the popular online media ones you’ve probably heard of like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Flickr, to the lesser-known ones like SlideShare, GovLoop, ZooLoo, Fluther, Scribnia, and Spoink. Some sites I visit daily, others quarterly, and many I’m inactive on but keep a profile in case I need to check something out.
To cap a week that saw me guest posting for Liz Hover on how to prevent a social media nervous breakdown and for Darren Rowse on why quitting Twitter is healthy; not to mention being praised by Jill Miller Zimon and criticized by Phil Butler, I thought I’d share some of the social networking sites that I frequent.
For starters, there is my business blog known as AriWriter. This is where I write about social media and online marketing, offering tips and strategies on a daily basis. I credit Jerry Bowles for naming my blog, even though we didn’t realize it at the time.
I also maintain a blog as a city councilor, updating my constituents and other interested readers a few times each week.
In synchronization with my blogging is my facebooking, where I control a few properties. My profile is where I communicate with my friends and a few internet colleagues who I trust and respect, but if I don’t know who you are to an extent I’d feel comfortable sharing myself with you, your friend request will be rejected. Rather, if you’d like to communicate with me on Facebook, I suggest you becoming a supporter of mine either as a blogger at facebook.com/ariwriter or as a councilor at facebook.com/ari4newburyport. I also administer a third page, geared more to the city than myself, at facebook.com/cityofnewburyport. Have your pick.
Keeping accounts open on MySpace and Friendster, and I may log in to both a few times a year to ensure there are no messages for me from people who don’t know I’ve moved on. I update my blog posts there, though, using a rotating banner of headlines via Feedburner. (Sidenote: If you have a blog and don’t burn your RSS feed with Feedburner, go do it now. It’s self-explanatory.)
I sporadically write restaurant reviews on Yelp and movie reviews, less frequently, on the Internet Movie Database. I need to review movies on the IMDb more often. Lately, I’ve been writing mini blog page reviews on a social bookmarking site called StumbleUpon. Those three links go to my profiles, by the way, from which you can navigate to the home pages to create your own accounts if you wish.
A music aficionado, iTunes is usually playing in the background. I occasionally test sound bytes on an internet radio station of mine which you can listen to at blip.fm/ariherzog. Want to hear a song on my play list? Have a whirl.
I’m tweeting less these days. While officially on a sabbatical as I type this (see above guest post about tweeting as a starting point why), I did add a tweet about 10 hours ago. You can see the account at twitter.com/ariherzog. Going forward, I figure I’ll tweet a few times a day — but even that often won’t be for a bit of time until I am more clear on who I want to learn from and interact with. Stay tuned.
One of the reasons I’m tweeting less is to be more active when I used to tweet. I need to find stable income in my life, and am actively applying for jobs, both part-time (ideally) and full-time (if the right opportunity). I’ve had several phone interviews in recent weeks and am crossing my fingers. I am perusing LinkedIn, thus, on a daily basis and keeping my resume up to date at VisualCV. (Unless I know you real well, I’m not going to accept a LinkedIn connection request from you either, by the way; unless you establish in the connection request your network or experience would be beneficial to me finding that income. Thanks.)
I specified GovLoop above. That’s a social networking site, powered by Ning, for bureaucrats, contractors, and passionate souls about the intersection of social media and government. While seeking numerous consulting gigs and longer-term opportunities in social media, I’m also inquiring about ways I can work at the crossroads of social media and public policy. Thoughts?
That’s the gist. With the exception of StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, YouTube, and Yelp where my username is ariwriter, pretty much everything else you can imagine has me down as ariherzog. So, head over to your favorite site and browse for my name and you might see me either active, sometimes active, or inactive. If you think I should be somewhere where you don’t see me, please add a note below with a link and an explanation why. Thanks much.
Have a great Saturday. Reminder you have one more day to submit comments to win a free copy of a social media marketing book. Details here.

Oh! Nice presentation. Like you I’m almost everywhere but currently prefer Twitter as a social connect over Facebook. Twitter help me to get new idea because I have to express much more within minimum space.

Great social introduction. Actually, as a result of your post the other day about Blellow, I just signed up. Unfortunately, it had an error when I did a search for Twitter friends. I’m sure it was just coincidental though.

Excellent idea for an article, and well displayed. This along with the sidebar buttons certainly gives you plenty to point to should someone ask.
