Smiling on LinkedIn

Fifteen months after LinkedIn began offering users the ability to display profile photos, have you uploaded yours?

I have. It’s the same mugshot you’ll see on every social network of mine, including my blog:

You can do this too, by logging into LinkedIn and following the instructions in “Edit My Profile.”

Oh, and please make it a photo in color with you smiling. I want to do business with you.

Thank you for returning to my blog! If you enjoyed reading the above, please consider following future tips and strategies by RSS reader, email delivery, or Kindle subscription. You may also reach me on Twitter @ariherzog.

What could be a better representation of your personal brand than a picture of you? Nothing. Using the same photo all all of your social media profiles helps people to identify you and helps build your personal brand.

Social network profiles without personal photos – like talking to people without looking into their face.

I certainly agree with adding a photo, but why in color – what if you’re a photographer or writer or other creative type? I don’t feel that a color photo is more important than one which is clear and well-shot.

Personally, I’m not smiling in mine, but it was taken as a series by a professional photographer, and it just happened to be my favorite of the bunch. I don’t use the same photo on every network, either. I find that a little disingenuous.

I had my profile photo the day feature became available. It is something most people should do. I went through multiple pictures, while soliciting feedback from my friends. I think I landed a good one (it is also on my blog).

I have heard concerns from some individuals in 40+ age group that it opens them up for age discrimination. My answer to them would be that there are more positives than negatives. People can figure out your age anyway. Plus, why would you want to work for any company that discriminates against you. And don’t give me that BS about the market. Startup world loves diversity, that is what keeps us competitive!

Do you think it would be beneficial to be able to have multiple photos like Facebook? You know how Facebook has photo albums, would it create Chao or use on LinkedIn?
