Status Update War: You Decide the Winner

by Ari Herzog on December 27, 2008 · 9 comments

Sparked by Adriel Hampton who suggests numerous ways to promote online content, I started thinking about status updates. You know what a status update is, right?

It’s really no different than your response when your mother asked about your day at school.

“It was fine, Mom!”

“Fine? What does that mean?”

And you dished.

In that vein, though matured over the years, here’s a snapshot of updates from 555 friends on Facebook:

Facebook status updates

All of the above entries are by people I am personally connected to, else I wouldn’t see their updates. Notice how some people added comments, noted by indents. There are many reasons why I don’t like how Facebook updates operate; one of which is because I can’t see my friends’ friends’ updates.

On the tweeting side, I can visit the Twitter public timeline and view everyone’s updates, whether or not (sometimes with good reason) I am connected to them.

Here’s a taste of some of the 1,445 Twitter people I am following:

Twitter status updates

There are no indents there, but people can still add comments in the form of @replies. (Speaking of which, here’s my popular article why I think the @replies feature is in need of an overhaul.)

MySpace, anyone? Snippets from my 47 friends remaining on that social network, and where you can see commenting or replying is not an option:

MySpace status updates

Of Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace, which status updates do you like best? You can respond according to user interface layout, ability to reply, perky or insightful content, someone’s name or picture you know, or anything else.

I like Facebook’s method the best. Indenting makes keeping track of things so much easier.

I Love twitter; no nonsensical flowers and knight battles etc…it’s real, genuine conversations you can join into; a little personal conversation mixed with occasional business chatter. a chat room of the world. I’m Wendy, and I’m a twitterholic. ;)

Depends on my mood and if I am in “professional” mode or social mode. I have a secret Twitter persona I love to be goofy on, and an identifiable Twitter user name for social networking. I intended Facebook to be professional, and as such keep it pretty straightforward; but it has turned out to be a connection hub with people from my past.

Twitter hands down. However, to throw in a wild card, next up would be LinkedIn. Hope you have a great weekend Ari!

I would say first Twitter — because that’s what twitter is centered around — and then Facebook. I dont use myspace. Good post!! I like the example about your mom, because your right – it’s the same thing. Way to put a different perspective on something we use everyday, (well some of us) haha.

I would say Facebook, but I still can’t quite figure out how it configures feeds. I have to click over to the status tab, or else I just get a smattering of those updates in my news feed, sometimes, it seems, purely at random. As I’ve written about on my blog, I like Facebook better as an overall platform, but it’s close to a tie or even favoring Twitter for the kind of “checking in” you refer to in this post. And please don’t get me started on MySpace …

Facebook’s is the nicest to keep track, though it is not my favorite service. The intended replies and the relatively clean interface makes it pretty easy for me to see what everyone is doing in a glance. I can modify my home feed so I don’t see all the bullshit apps and only get updated on what I care about.
