Train with Airmen in Air Force 2.0

by Ari Herzog on September 19, 2008

With a mission statement to “develop America’s airmen today… for tomorrow,” the United States Air Force published a white paper earlier this year, titled, “On Learning: The Future of Air Force Education and Training.”

Say goodbye to your father’s air force.

The white paper calls for a renewed and focused Air Force 2.0, and the new vision of the Air Education and Training Command, responsible for 700,000 military and civilian employees, involves “delivering unrivaled air, space, and cyberspace training and education.”

Its social media strategy includes the design and development of a virtual learning environment called MyBase, built around “technological, informational, organizational, pedagogical, social, and related capabilities.”

Extracts from the whitepaper:

…designed as a virtual Air Force Base, MyBase can be tailored to recruit the Millennial generation, inform the public, deliver precision learning, provide pre-deployment training or even conduct operational rehearsals.

…MyBase provides a virtual three-dimensional world populated with Avatars.

…using haptic technology, Airmen will be able to manipulate virtual objects and add the sense of touch to the visual cues obtained in virtual environments. From maintenance to medicine to fire fighting and flying, education and training experiences will be enhanced through multi-media and multi-sensory inputs.

…due to the sophisticated social networking websites in operation today, our newest
Airmen will be extremely comfortable networking, collaborating, and learning through MyBase.

Hat tip to Craig Thomler, providing an Australian perspective and for pointing me to a story on NextGov.com that overviews MyBase and indicates a contract will be awarded in two weeks.
