Today marks not only my birthday but the 1-year anniversary of moving to Newburyport, Massachusetts.
Over the past year, I’ve written 357 blog posts and shot many pictures. You can see some local photography of mine here and here.
In celebration of my birthday and apartment anniversary, this weekly roundup introduces you to the other bloggers from my 17,000 population community.
- Say hi to Gillian Swart at Port Reporter Unlimited.
A former reporter for the Newburyport Current, Gillian freelances these days with area magazines. Her blog is not devoted to any one topic, but she writes from her heart about issues that both concern her and cause bouts of giggles.
- Say hi to Tom Salemi at Newburyport Posts.
Like Gillian, Tom also wrote for a local paper but his employer was the Newburyport Daily News. In the years since, he’s dabbled in this and that, worked here and there, and writes about esoteric topics. Locally, he focuses on real estate and land development issues.
- Say hi to Mary and Rob at South End Blend.
I don’t know them all that well (I don’t even know their last name) but they keep me entertained with daily pictures, pictures, and more pictures of fruit from their garden, cakes and pies from their kitchen, and beer parties at the Rockfish. Am I missing anything? Oh yeah, very pretty pictures!
- Say hi to Peter McClelland at McClelland Miscellanea.
Peter is a part-time writer for The Town Common, a weekly tabloid distributed for free to regional restaurants and retail outlets for consumer pick-up. He writes a lot about sports and profiles neat people in the area. He doesn’t add to his blog often, but I enjoy reading him when he does.
- Say hi to Mary Baker Eaton at The Newburyport Blog.
Mary is an enigma to the local blogging community. For starters, she was the first woman in the city to run a blog and named it, appropriately, what you see above. While her content is informative and quirky, she doesn’t allow people to write comments. She’s the only blogger on this list who prohibits comments and I don’t understand why.
- Say hi to the anonymous persona at Newburyport According to X.
Mr. X is a mystery blogger for he (or she) doesn’t reveal his (or her) identity. No matter, for X has no qualms to write commentary on just about everything that moves. If only more people would take X seriously.
- Say hi to Ed Cameron at his self-titled blog.
Ed is the only Newburyport city councilor to maintain a blog. He writes about politics and sports, and others on this list, whatever floats his boat. I only wish he updated his stuff more frequently, but he’s getting better.
- Meet Tom Ryan and his miniature schnauzer, Atticus M. Finch, at Tom & Atticus Hike the White Mountains for MSPCA-Angell Medical Center.
Tom and Atticus don’t live here anymore but if you ask anyone on the street, they’d laugh and disagree. Tom used to publish a monthly rag called The Undertoad, which ceased publication before I moved here. Tom and his pup moved to the mountains, where they climb every 14,000-footer in the name of medical science.
- Meet Michelle Xiarhos Curran at Singuloso.
Michelle writes about motherhood and other stuff that doesn’t appeal to me, but that doesn’t prevent me from stopping in now and then to see what she’s up to. Soon after I moved to town, Michelle interviewed me for the paper she then-freelanced for, so I’m biased in my relationship with her. She has a loyal following, so you might enjoy her posts, too.
- Meet Mauro DiBacco at Newburyport Deep Sea Fishing.
Mauro is the captain of the Kelly Ann, a charter fishing vessel based on Plum Island point. He uses the blog as a ship’s log of sorts, with pictures and commentary from his marine travels. Neat stuff!
- Meet Alex Hasapis at 2B2 Flyby.
Alex is a pilot who flies in and out of Plum Island Airfield, a grassy strip which the FAA designates as 2B2. Need I say more?
- Meet Jennifer Karin at Jennifer Karin.
Jennifer is among the newer online journalists to enter the local blogosphere. She’s an “activist, author, columnist, wife, and mother of three boys – though not necessarily in that order,” according to her self-titled website.
Like my other roundups, make sure to give these fine folks some link love. Click on their blogs, scroll around, post a comment if you feel inspired, and subscribe to their feeds.
Am I missing anyone?

Awesome Newburyport photos. I found your blog from your link to my blog (linking to Liz Strauss’s blog).
Oh, I forgot to ask, what kind of camera do you use?
Thanks, Ari. Happy Birthday (again)!
Kris, I currently take pictures with a Canon PowerShot SD1100 ELPH. It’s ultra-compact and a shiny blue!
Ari! I just saw this. Thanks for the nod to our little blog! And happy, happy belated birthday. Maybe next time you go to the Rockfish your name will be on the drink board.
