When Personal Branding Fails

by Ari Herzog on June 20, 2008 · 0 comments

As a means to further my personal branding across websites, I typically choose ariwriter or ariherzog as my preferred screen names. People know me by my name and my online moniker.

For instance, I use ariwriter for my film reviews on the IMDb and restaurant reviews on Yelp, and ariherzog on Flickr.

On TripAdvisor, though, where I ultimately chose ariwriter, I saw the following text beside the fill-in box for a screen name:

Please do not use your real name – this screen name will be your public identity on TripAdvisor.

Why does TripAdvisor frown on people to post reviews under their real names?

I’d rather believe the legitimacy of a review written by JohnSmith than JohnSmiles25, wouldn’t you?
