Why I Don’t Care for Ikea Werbungs

by Ari Herzog on January 29, 2009 · 1 comment

German for an advertisement, the latest werbung to go viral on YouTube is a 3-D catalog distributed last year by IKEA, which celebrates the notoriety of printing the most third-class catalogs in the world.

Hat tip to Erin Norton for sharing this video:

Kudos to the design team at Jung Von Matt for running with the ad, but the irony of watching it today is the United States Postal Service announced a proposal to stop mail delivery on Tuesdays or Saturdays in reaction to dwindling carrier usage.

It’s about time. I congratulate the USPS for saving $2 million for recycling ink cartridges and implementing green computing initiatives, but I don’t want to receive more catalogs in the mail.

Save the trees and keep the werbungs at bay. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather shop at ikea.com.

LIFE WITHOUT THE IKEA CATALOG??? NEVER!!!!

I am an IKEA fan (yes, I am German and my parents had a vacation home in Sweden when I was little!) and think this was an awesome idea! Let’s not forget that IKEA is designing stuff for small spaces (i.e. using less material), as well as using eco-glues and eco-fillings (for their mattresses, for example). Coming from Europe, IKEA already puts much more effort in being sufficient and “cleaner” than other companies here in the US. And if I had to decide whether I want the (daily!!!) Victoria Secrets catalog (they send you EVERY PAIR OF UNDERWEAR IN A SINGLE PLASTIC WRAPPING PLUS SEPARATE PACKAGING!!!) or the IKEA catalog (with my family on the cover!), I would definitely go for the Swedish furniture store!

if you need more information on IKEA’s environmental efforts, look here:
IKEA and the environment or go to page 140 in the new IKEA catalog!
