Hi Ari,

I wanted to follow up on your excellent LinkedIn post with the story of an internship fair that I attended yesterday (my firm is looking for an online marketing intern).

I asked each student if they were active on social networks. They all shook their heads vigorously when I mentioned Facebook.

But only two of the approximately 50 students I talked to had even heard of LinkedIn.

It's shocking to me for several reasons.

1) These students are plugged in to social networks... so why haven't they stumbled across LinkedIn?

2) It would a great tool for students-- especially in this economy. Most of the students I met looked quite scared about their prospects after graduating. Many over-qualified students were extremely interested in our unpaid internship.

3) Why isn't the career center (apparently) not promoting LinkedIn as a way for these students to find out about job opportunities and to connect with potential employers (or contacts who could refer the students to potential employers)?

After I explained how LinkedIn operates, most seemed quite eager to find out more.

I am surprised that LinkedIn isn't doing a better job of promoting itself to these students.

And I am surprised that students aren't being more proactive about using social-networking sites for more than hooking up. ;-)

Ari,
As someone who blogs and dives into facebook and twitter, I should make better use of LinkedIn, but I, like many others, have yet to find a real use for it. I’ve been “stockpiling” my contacts–I’m not amassing a bunch of random names, but I’m also not sure what to do with them really. I can tell you about every person on my connections list and most of them should recognize my name, I hope. But I haven’t really figured out what to do with it although I’ve followed about half your tips.

Ari, your blog was forwarded to me by Kellet. I am glad to say that I enjoy the LinkedIn Network. I have not been part of it very long; however, I have used it to connect to current and past co-workers or professionals in my industry. I am joining groups specific to my industry (still have some approvals pending) AND I have a recent picture.
I agree with you that when I browse for contacts in my industry and I see they have contacts in the hundreds and subscribe to as many discussion groups I am highly suspect of the quality of such contacts.
