Ari,

While I think it's wonderful that, for instance, soldiers overseas can see their families via webcams, etc., and I could theoretically speak face-to-cam with someone in Outer Mongolia, it still doesn't take the place of going to Mr. India and shooting the shit.

But alas, I know these old fashioned ideas are quickly becoming ancient history!

Ari…your post couldn’t find a better time for me than today. I’m a tech individual for years and just finally taking time from work and personal life to ‘join the conversation’. Feeling a bit awkward in this new space but much stronger finding new inspiration for why I should. Having just brought a new life into this world my spirit is lifted to consider the future possibilities of living in a connected world. Having lived away from family and being single most of my life, block parties were not much of an option but happy hours and sporting events seemed to fit the bill. It seems to me the healthy way is to take advantage of both worlds… the virtual and the tactile for their strengths and hopefully not replacing one with other but instead creating better connectedness. My time is usually spent on Skype with family and it amazes me at how much of a void it fills when connecting by video. We even hosted my baby shower through Skype and connected FL with PA, MI, and Brazil to share the time with my siblings and closest relatives…sure beats flying today!

Anyway…thanks for listening and inspiring the network!

You both bring up valid points about the potential transference from physical social interaction to virtual social interaction.

Don’t forget about web cameras and video teleconferencing software which are more mainstream-oriented to bridge that gap.
